About Us

The Launceston Skeptics was founded by Jin-oh Choi on February 27th, 2010 through a Meetup.com group. We initially met on the third Thursday of each month at Alchemy Bar & Restaurant. We moved to our new home The Royal Oak Hotel, late in 2010 and also started a second Skeptics in the Pub.

Launceston Skeptics is a group of people who are interested in the promotion of critical thinking and helping others to make rational decisions based on evidence. We believe this is especially important when dealing with health, a field in which there are a large number of unqualified people claiming to be able to improve health with untested, implausible and sometimes expensive therapies. This can be particularly dangerous if people forgo proper medical treatment for unproven alternative therapies.

We are open-minded, but will always seek evidence whenever others make extraordinary claims, whether they be alleged psychic ability, healing through various magical or any other supernatural means. We at Launceston Skeptics believe that in the end, the evidence is king and not just faith.

We now meet twice a month, Skeptics in the Pub (1st and 3rd Thursday of each month).

On July 3rd, 2013, the Launceston Skeptics became Launceston Skeptics Inc. Incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 1964.

Launceston Skeptics Inc.

Launceston Skeptics Inc. (the association) is a non-profit organisation, which seeks to promote critical thinking and an understanding of the scientific method. The association aims to:

The Thinker (Our Logo)

The Thinker (Le Penseur in French) is a bronze sculpture on marble pedestal by Auguste Rodin, whose first cast, of 1902, is now in the Musée Rodin in Paris; there are about 28 original castings, as well as various other versions, studies, and posthumous castings. It depicts a man in sober meditation battling with a powerful internal struggle. It is often used to represent philosophy. (Source: Wikipedia.org)
